Syamion Domash

Ex-chairman of the Hrodna Oblast Executive Committee, Deputy of the Supreme Council of the 12th and 13th convocations. At the moment he is a pensioner.

Syamion Domash was born on January 2, 1950 in the village of Tumashy, Lyakhavichy rayon, Brest region.

Syamion Domash has the technical and economic training (Belarusian Institute of National Economy). At first he worked in the transportation industry: started as a mechanic in the Astravets carpool (Hrodna region), he later became director of the 1st Hrodna carpool. Later, he oversaw the industrial department at Hrodna City Committee of the CPB.

In 1987 he headed the power structure in the Hrodna region. First, he was the Chairman of Lida City Council (1987-90), and then he held the same position but in Hrodna (1990-93), after that he headed the Hrodna region (1994-96). He was a deputy of the Supreme Council of the 12th and 13th convocations, and in the latter he also was a member of the presidium. During the 1996 referendum, together with 70 MPs, he signed a statement of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s impeachment.

Syamion Domash was the only regional leader who openly joined the opposition. He headed two public associations – the Coordinating Committee Hrodna Initiative (leaders of non-governmental organizations, trade unions, political parties and movements of Hrodna region) and the Coordination Council of the Regional Belarus (similar association, but on the national level).

In the elections of 2001, as part of a compromise between the opposing forces, he withdrew his candidature in favor of Mr Hancharyk and headed his campaign headquarters. After the elections, he suffered a heart attack and had a surgery. He worked in commercial entreprises, then for a long time he was out of work until he became Director of the Hrodna Leather Association (2006-14).

Mr Domash is a candidate master of sport in boxing. Syamion Domash is married. He is an Orthodox Christian. He is not member of any party.

His wife Zoya used to work in Belarusbank. They have two sons and grandchildren.
