Elections in Belarus 2015

Russia to support Lukashenka’s reelection – envoy

Russia cannot interfere in other countries’ election campaigns, but it supports the reelection of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, Russian Ambassador to Belarus Aleksandr Surikov told news agency BelaPAN in Minsk on Wednesday.

According to him, the programs of opposition candidates for president do not provide for such measures. “Maybe, part of voters would like to support the opposition, but the opposition has nothing to offer but slogans,” Surikov said.

“Belarus must be grateful to Lukashenka because thanks to his efforts the country managed to advance to the present-day level from the chaos of the 1990s,” state-owned news agency BelTA quoted the Russian envoy as saying.

Belarus is facing ‘a number of challenges’ today, but the government can cope with them, the diplomat noted. He also stated that the purchasing power parity of the Belarusian GDP is comparable to that of China.
